The summer of 2005 was a time of rising vandalism, drug dealing, mischief and other crimes in Downtown Doylestown. The cost to the borough exceeded $40,000 in repairs and overtime for police.
There have also been numerous reports from citizens about the behavior of the teens, many of them teens from other towns, including rudeness, speeding, blocking business entrances, and many other complaints.
Borough leaders are considering a curfew, surveillance cameras in problem areas, extra police presence and tougher enforcement, as well as a volunteer watch group, to combat these problems. These proposals were presented in an article in the Intelligencer on January 12 (click here for article).
The curfew, under a preliminary proposal, affects people under 18: Sunday through Thursday at 10:00 pm; Fridays and Saturdays 11:30 pm. Children under 14 might face an earlier curfew.
