When the Academy of the New Church Secondary Schools student production of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's Mary Poppins comes to the stage in Bryn Athyn this April and May, audiences won't believe their eyes! Singing! Dancing! Flying!

Wait. Flying? In a high school student production?

Well, of course. As Mary Poppins has said, "Anything Show More...can happen if you let it." Members of the cast are going to be airborne for several scenes, thanks to fantastical aerial effects created by theatrical flight service Flying by Foy, the international company that put four Peter Pans in the air over Broadway stages beginning in 1950 and has "flown" thousands of performers since then.

And it's going to be magical.

"We've worked with Foy twice in the past," says Sarah Cooper Waelchli, producer of the school's spring musical. "Our Bert has been rehearsing his tap dancing all spring break in preparation for his flying tap dance scene.

"The students were very excited to work on Mary Poppins. It's a show they're all familiar with, the flying is thrilling and slightly terrifying, and while the music has been challenging for our actors and pit orchestra, the songs are just so much fun."

Cooper Waelchli also noted that Mary Poppins gives the cast and audiences more light-hearted fare, after the more intense Oliver! for last year's spring musical.

One of the most popular Disney movies of all time, Mary Poppins tell the story of young Jane and Michael Banks in 1910 England, their friend Bert and nanny extraordinaire Mary. Through magical adventures and common sense lessons, Mary helps reconnect the children and their father and teaches the Banks family members to value each other again.

For audiences of all ages, ANCSS's magical Mary Poppins at Mitchell Performing Arts Center (MPAC) in Bryn Athyn blends irresistible story, unforgettable songs, breathtaking dance numbers and astonishing stagecraft.

Declan Durand, ANCSS junior from Bryn Athyn, who took flight above MPAC's stage once before as Peter Pan in 2015, plays the singing, dancing, jack-of-all-trades Bert. Brianna Salvatori, a senior from Maple Glen, is Mary Poppins, flying in by umbrella to serve as the children's nanny. Freshman Hayden Hoffman and sophomore Serena Boyesen, both from Bryn Athyn, are Michael and Jane Banks. [Attached is the full cast, with grades and hometowns.)

This year's production of Mary Poppins is directed by Sarah Gladish & Chris Waelchli, with choreography by Sarah Gladish assisted by Rachel Boyce. Chris Waelchli is Music Director, assisted by Simon Daum. Donna Bostock is Pit Orchestra Director. Set Design & Construction is by ANCSS StageCraft Class (taught by Chris Waelchli) and Costume Designer is Judy Merrell. The show is produced by Sarah Cooper Waelchli.. ...Show Less

The Bucks County Symphony Orchestra, under the leadership of Music Director Gary S. Fagin, announces its annual Spring Concert, to be held at Central Bucks High School South on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at 8:00 pm.

The concert is sponsored by Tom and Judy Newman. A special highlight of the evening will be an observance of Maestro Fagin's 15th Show More...anniversary as Music Director of the BCSO.

Featured in the program are members of the distinguished Brown-Urioste-Canellakis Trio, joining the BCSO in a powerful performance of Beethoven's Concerto for Piano, Violin, and Cello (Triple Concerto). Pianist Michael Brown has been described by The New York Times as a "young piano visionary" and "one of the leading figures in the current renaissance of performer-composers." His unique artistry is reflected in a creative approach to programming that often interweaves the classics with contemporary works and his own compositions. Violinist Elena Urioste has been hailed by critics and audiences alike for her lush tone, the nuanced lyricism of her playing, and her commanding stage presence. Since first appearing with the Philadelphia Orchestra at age thirteen, she has given acclaimed performances with major orchestras throughout the United States. Cellist Nicholas Canellakis has been hailed by the The New Yorker as a "superb young soloist," and has become one of the most sought-after and innovative cellists of his generation, captivating audiences throughout the United States and abroad. The New York Times described his playing as "impassioned" and "soulful," with "the audience seduced by Mr. Canellakis's rich, alluring tone."

The BCSO opens the concert with Wagner's "Entrance of the Gods into Valhalla", from the closing scene of Das Rheingold, first in a series of four music dramas comprising the composer's Ring cycle. The music depicts Wotan, ruler of the gods, leading his fellow deities across a rainbow bridge into their new home, Valhalla, where they believe they will live as heroes for all eternity.

The Orchestra's 64th season concludes with a performance of Saint-Saëns' Symphony No. 3, popularly known as the Organ Symphony because of the inclusion of that majestic instrument in several places throughout the piece. Commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society and premiered in London in 1886, this Symphony was dedicated to the memory of Saint-Saëns' dear friend and supporter, Franz Liszt. Timothy Harrell, organist and choirmaster of Trinity Episcopal Church in Solebury, will be the guest performer for this work. Having earned a Master of Music degree in organ performance and church music at Westminster Choir College, Mr. Harrell has also served as organist at Doylestown Presbyterian Church, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Trenton, and Lehigh University.. ...Show Less

WISTER QUARTET CONCERT

The Wister Quartet returns to Glencairn Museum's Great Hall on Sunday afternoon, April 30, to entertain and lift up music lovers with a program of chamber music by Staneck, Finzi, Haydn and Brahms.

Doors open at 2:30 for 3:00 performance.

Since its formation in 1987, Grammy-nominated Wister Quartet-Nancy Bean, first violin, Davyd Booth, Show More...second violin and piano; Pamela Fay, viola; and Lloyd Smith, cello-has earned high praise from critics and audiences alike for its superb musicianship. Memorable performances include those with guest artists Emanuel Ax, Alicia de Larrocha, Christoph Eschenbach, Wolfgang Sawallisch and Yo-Yo Ma.

The Philadelphia-based quartet named the group in 1987 for Frances Anne Wister, founder of the volunteer committee of the Philadelphia Orchestra, where three of the four played a full year-round schedule; the fourth maintained an active freelance career. Four decades later, they continue to find chamber music to be the ultimate, intimate musical experience.

Wister has performed on college campuses and regular music series throughout the Eastern United States and in concerts in China, South America and Europe. Since its earliest days, it has been featured on the Philadelphia Orchestra's Chamber Music Series. It has also performed at the Lenape Chamber Players Summer Festivals, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center chamber series and its own Chamber Series at the German Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.. ...Show Less

The Hot Club of Philadelphia was started in 2001 by guitarist Barry Wahrhaftig.

They are an acoustic ensemble, dedicated to playing 'Gypsy Jazz.' That's the term used to describe the music pioneered by the legendary original 'Hot Club of France Quintet,' which was led by guitarist Django Reinhardt and Violinist Stephane Grappelli. Django and Show More...Grappelli were attempting to do their own version of American 'Hot Jazz,' as played by artists like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. They used acoustic guitars, bass and violin, rather than horns and drums. Grappelli and Django added some French and Gypsy flavor and created a blend of music that is quite popular and accessible. The HCPhilly mixes the original style of the HCOF, along with their own modern influences.

The band performs as a trio, quartet, quintet, etc. There have been some changes in the line up through the years. Bassist Jim Stager has been with the group from the beginning.

Joshua Machiz & Dylan Taylor also share bass duties. Dan Pearce is the 2nd guitarist, and violinist Joseph Arnold is a key part of the group's recordings and shows, and clarinetists Bob Butryn and Paul Butler are also mainstays .

The band features vocalist Phyllis Chapell and they have collaborated with Denise King.

Their second CD, 'Gypsy Routes,' released in 2005, features Chapell singing pieces like Edith Piaf's 'La Foule' in French, and 'Cry Me a River' [in English].. ...Show Less

Jeff Watts, the drummer they call "Tain," spent his formative years with Wynton and Branford Marsalis, and his compositional skills now command equal attention.

Jeff initially majored in classical percussion at Pittsburgh's Duquesne University, where he was primarily a timpanist, followed by enrollment at the Berklee School of Music. Jeff joined Show More...the Wynton Marsalis Quartet in 1981 and proceeded to win three Grammy Awards with the ensemble: Black Codes From The Underground, J Mood and Marsalis Standard Time. Watts left Wynton Marsalis in 1988. After working with George Benson, Harry Connick. Jr. and McCoy Tyner, he joined the Branford Marsalis Quartet in 1989, winning Grammy's for I Heard You Twice the First Time and Contemporary Jazz.

In the film and television industry Jeff has appeared as both a musician on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and as an actor, Rhythm Jones in Spike Lee's "Mo Better Blues". Jeff joined Kenny Garrett's band after returning to New York in 1995 and continued to record and tour with Branford Marsalis as well as Danilo Perez, Michael Brecker, Betty Carter, Kenny Kirkland, Courtney Pine, Geri Allen, Alice Coltrane, Greg Osby, McCoy Tyner, Steve Coleman, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Harry Connick Jr, and Ravi Coltrane.

Along with explosive power, blinding speed and mastery of complex rhythms and time signatures, Watts brings a rare sense of elegance, tried-by-fire composure, and a gritty street funk to his music. His artistic ingenuity expresses itself in his incomparable technique, sweltering sense of swing, and an extraordinary ability to imbue his music with majestic grace and elegant repose. A true jazz innovator, Watts never fails to deliver the percussive magic that has been his trademark since his emergence on the contemporary jazz scene.. ...Show Less

Hot Bijouxx performs an energetic mélange of Prohibition-era jazz, French gypsy swing-waltz, and Brazilian bossa nova. Renditions of Great American Songbook standards are metamorphosized by Hot Bijouxx's arresting arrangements: A class French chanson marries a sizzling samba. A Europop club hit is transmuted into a feverish, Balkan gypsy anthem. A Show More...WWI era blues soars amongst the 3/4 time of a Parisian waltz.

The band features the senstive, ever-creative vocals of Najwa Parkins, who spent nascent years amongst the jazz community of The Deer Head Inn, and has since toured internationally. Hot Bijouxx's accordionist, Dallas Vietty, is a renowned force in the world of French musette & Gypsy jazz. Ryan McNeely, scholar and devotee of bossa nova, contributes a unique versatility on archtop guitar, while musically gifted drummer Kevin Ripley punctuates the vintage sound with snare and hi-hat. NEA JAZZ MASTER, saxophonist David Liebman was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 4, 1946. After contracting polio as a small child, he began classical piano lessons at the age of nine and clarinet/saxophone by twelve. His interest in jazz was sparked by seeing John Coltrane perform live in New York City clubs such as Birdland, Village Vanguard Show More...and the Half Note. Throughout high school and college, Liebman pursued his jazz interest by studying with saxophone guru Joe Allard (other Allard alumni are Eddie Daniels, Mike Brecker, Steve Grossman, Harry Carney) as well as jazz musicians Lennie Tristano and Charles Lloyd. Upon graduation from New York University (with a degree in American History), he began to seriously devote himself to the full time pursuit of being a jazz artist.

In 1977, Liebman did a world tour with pianist Chick Corea followed by the formation of the David Liebman Quintet with John Scofield as featured sideman. After several world tours and recordings by the quintet over three years, he reunited with Richard Beirach in both the duo format and Quest in 1981. Beginning with bassist George Mraz and drummer Al Foster, the group solidified with the addition of bassist Ron McClure and drummer Billy Hart. Through 1991 the group recorded seven CDs, toured extensively and did many workshops with students worldwide, garnering high critical praise worldwide. (The group has reunited for special tours and recordings since 2005.)

From 1991 through 2012, the Dave Liebman Group featuring guitarist Vic Juris toured and recorded nearly twenty CDs representing a very eclectic direction that ranged from jazz standards to Puccini arias, adaptations from the John Coltrane and Miles Davis repertoires, as well as original compositions in styles ranging from world music to fusion and free jazz, always maintaining a repertoire that balanced the past, present and future.

David has been featured on over five hundred recordings, of which he has been the leader or co-leader on nearly two hundred with several hundred original compositions written and recorded. His artistic output has ranged from straight ahead classic jazz to chamber music; from fusion to avant garde and world music. Other ongoing performing/recording combinations include the group Different But the Samefeaturing saxophonist Ellery Eskelin, drummer Jim Black and bassist Tony Marino; the "We3" trio with bassist/composer extraordinaire Steve Swallow and long time Lieb associate Adam Nussbaum on drums; duo work with both pianists Phil Markowitz and Marc Copland.

His newest group Expansions formed in 2013 features musicians from the new generation of jazz players living in New York; Bobby Avey on piano, Matt Vashlishan on reeds, Alex Ritz on drums along with the perennial Tony Marino on bass. The music of this group reflects current trends and styles being played by the new crop of jazz players.

Lieb's published materials include a wide variety of books considered classics in the field as well as instructional DVDs and chamber music (Aebersold Publications, Caris Music and Advance Music): Self Portrait of A Jazz Artist, A Chromatic Approach to Jazz Harmony And Melody, Developing A Personal Saxophone Sound, several of which have been translated into multiple languages. Liebman's biography is titled What It Is-The Life Of A Jazz Artist in conversation with author extraordinaire Lewis Porter (Scarecrow Press).

His teaching activities at universities and in clinic settings have taken him literally around the world as a result of his varied musical directions and expertise on several instruments, along with an ability to articulate the intricacies of the jazz language, aesthetic and technique. Over the years, he has regularly received grantees to study with him funded by the NEA (U.S.), the Canadian Arts Council, as well as arts councils of numerous European countries. In 1989 he founded the International Association of Schools of Jazz (IASJ), an organization dedicated to networking educators and students from international jazz schools through periodic meetings, exchange programs and newsletters. Liebman presently serves as the Artistic Director of the IASJ and is Artist in Residence at the Manhattan School of Music, NYC; Guest Lecturer at the University of Toronto and the Global Jazz Project at the Berklee School in Boston. He has consistently placed among the top three finalists of the Downbeat Critics Poll since 1973 in the Soprano Saxophone category, gaining the top place several times in polls conducted by the magazines Jazz Ed and Jazz Times. Lieb is the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from the Sibelius Academy (Helsinki, Finland); the Order of Arts and Letters (France); and the NEA Jazz Master award which is the highest accolade granted by the U.S. government in the jazz field (2011).. ...Show Less

Now one of the most performed shows in America, Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Tony Winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, My Favourite Year, Once on This Island, Ragtime), have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude Show More...McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination - Jojo. The colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.
The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to miltary school for thinking too many "thinks". Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant. Seussical is fun for the whole family!

Originally, a group of Senate staffers were planning a show for a Christmas party in 1981. Their first idea was to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn't find three wise men or a virgin. The troupe has been featured on NBC, ABC, and CBS, tackling the foibles of elected officials through skit and song, transmuting scandals and shortcomings into pure laughter. Every year, the troupe also appears on multiple NPR stations nationwide during their "Politics Takes a Holiday" specials.

Although the Capitol Steps are based in Washington, DC, most of their shows are out-of-town at 1000-1500 seat theatres from Seattle to Boston and every city in between. They have also performed for the last five Presidents, but not yet for President Trump.. ...Show Less

Who knew that those three legendary chords could create such a long, interesting history for The Shadows of Knight. The band was formed in 1964, originally as The Shadows. They became The Shadows of Knight in 1965 featuring Jim Sohns, Warren Rogers, Wayne Pursell, Tom Schiffour, and Norm Gotsch. Right as they were hitting it big, Pursell and Gotsch Show More...left the band, recruiting Jerry McGeorge and Joe Kelley. This is the lineup that recorded the two most well known Shadows of Knight albums, "Gloria" and "Backdoor Men". David "Hawk" Wolinski was recruited as the Organ Player, and later replaced Rogers on bass after he was drafted into the US Military. This lineup lasted about 18 months before Sohns fired the entire band. After 4 billboard charting hits, the "classic" lineup of SOK was no more. Sohns performed as the SOK with many different lineups, and in 1969, the Shadows of Knight released one last million seller, "Shake". This was with a Jimy Sohns and a totally different Super K lineup. Sohns has never stopped touring as The Shadows of Knight. After 37 years of no new albums, The Shadows of Knight released "A Knight to Remember" in 2006, to critical acclaim. In August of 2016, The ORIGINAL Shadows of Knight got back together for one last show in Arlington Heights for the first time since 1967. But the history doesn't end there...Sohns continues to rock festivals, arenas, casinos, clubs, and anywhere that he feels like to this very day. 51 years later and you can still hear the crowd scream "G L O R I A!!!!". ...Show Less
